Vol.1 No. 1 - Environment Updates

We are back!

UPDATES

·   Now 80% of garbage thrown at the San Carlos City dumpsite is biodegradable.

·   Compost from the dumpsite is now being harvested and sold. The City Government has allowed those living around the area to sell the item as an additional livelihood for them.

·   An ecology center had been set up.

·   Focus is now also given on residual waste and what to do with it. Under study are two prospective projects. One for the production of pavement blocks from plastic bags through compression and the other is the production of school desks from Styrofoam. The later is a technology developed by the Department of Science and Technology. Through a mixing machine, Styrofoam is combined with used cooking oil, then, the concoction is placed into molds. When dried, these can be used as table tops or school chairs.

·   Genesys had tapped the expertise of the Solid Waste Association of the Philippines (SWAP) for its Barangay trainings on eco-solid waste processing to be undertaken in May.

·   The City Government of San Carlos is now finalizing site procurement details where its Solid Waste Facility will be set up.
